A range of items highlighting the bond between Byredo and the brand’s longstanding creative collaborators, M/M Paris. Comprising a friendship knife, a bandana, an illustrated silk scarf and a folio of scented drawing paper – whose illustrations were evocative of the free association process of the Surrealists – the collection channeled M/M Paris’ distinct visual vocabulary as well as celebrating their ongoing partnership with the brand.
Five hand-crafted zebu horn combs, each adopting a different shape according to use, were conceived as a tribute to a powerful woman in African history: Queen Pharaoh Hatshepsut, the legendary Queen of Sheba, Queen Mother Idia of Benin, the warrior Queen Aminatu of the Zazzau kingdom and the powerful Queen Nzinga of Angola. Following an ancestral tradition of craftsmanship, each was made in the French Pyrenees using 14 steps of production, meaning that every comb was unique and varied slightly in colour. The texture of the horn, rich in keratin, is similar to human hair, meaning it is the ideal accessory to gently comb and preserve its natural state.
To celebrate the launch of Craig McDean’s Rizzoli photobook Manual, Byredo embarked on a world tour from Paris to Seoul, complete with merchandise to suit the book’s theme. Drawing on its nostalgic Americana and muscle car aesthetics, products from mechanic jackets, caps and printed T-shirts to zippo lighters and can coolers were devised to offer a wry, boyish reflection on McDean and Gorham’s mutual fascination with fast cars and fashion – alongside limited editions of the book, designed with a bespoke Byredo sleeve.
